What are the Producer Price Indexes?

What is Final demand?

What's new this quarter

From the March quarter 2025, the following indexes will be included in the Time Series Spreadsheets:

  • 4900 Air and space transport (Table 21. Output of the Transport, postal and warehousing industries, group and class index numbers)
  • 8101 Technical vocational education (Table 34. Output of the Education and training industries, group and class index numbers)

Quarterly overview

Final demand rose 0.9% this quarter and 3.7% through the year to March quarter 2025. Price growth for goods and services produced by most industries was lower compared to the same quarter last year, except for Manufacturing products. This was driven by the depreciation of the Australian dollar affecting imported goods destined for final consumption, leading to strongest growth in Manufacturing Final demand since September 2022.

The main contributors to quarterly growth in final demand were:

  • Property operators (+1.1%), due to high demand and rising rents for residential properties. While high rents have led to ongoing strength in this industry, the quarterly increases have been softening over the last year.
  • Other transport equipment manufacturing (+7.3%), due to price reviews reflecting the depreciation of the Australian dollar and higher labour costs.
  • Tertiary education (+3.5%), due to seasonal increases typically seen in a March quarter as fees are adjusted on an annual basis. Fee increases linked to inflation and wages were lower in size compared to 2024.

There were no significant negative price movements offsetting the price rises for the quarter.

Using price indexes

Price indexes in contracts

Price indexes published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) provide summary measures of the movements in various categories of prices over time. They are published primarily for use in Government economic analysis. Price indexes are also often used in contracts by businesses and government to adjust payments and/or charges to take account of changes in categories of prices (Indexation Clauses).

Use of Price Indexes in Contracts sets out a range of issues that should be taken into account by parties considering including an Indexation Clause in a contract using an ABS published price index.
