Key statistics

  • Total selected industries operating profit before tax (OPBT) declined $60.0b (-8.6%).
  • The Mining industry had the largest fall in OPBT of $66.7b (-27.4%), while the Transport, postal and warehousing industry had the largest increase of $19.4b (103.3%).
  • Total selected industries Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) decreased $31.1b (-3.8%).
  • Mining earnings declined $42.4b (-15.4%).
  • Agriculture, forestry and fishing earnings declined $9.6b (-35.4%).
  • Rental, hiring and real estate services earnings grew $6.5b (9.4%).

Industry summary

Total earnings across the selected industries fell $31.1b. The largest falls were seen in the Mining industry (down $42.4b). Falls were also seen in  the Agriculture, forestry and fishing industry (down $9.6b) and the Manufacturing industry (down $3.6b). The largest rise was seen in the Rental, hiring and real estate services industry (up $6.5b), followed by the Professional, scientific and technical services industry (up $4.8b).

Business performance by Employment range

  • In 2023-24, businesses of all Employment ranges recorded increases in most key data items with the exception of OPBT and EBITDA.
  • Businesses with over 200 employees recorded the largest increases for most key data items with increases to Employment (270,000, 6.2%), Wages and salaries ($33.5b, 9.5%) and Total income ($90.0b, 4.1%).
  • Businesses of all Employment ranges recorded a decrease in OPBT. Businesses with 200 or more employees recorded the largest declines in OPBT with a 13.6% (-$39.5b) decrease.
  • Businesses with 5-19 employees was the only Employment range to record a fall in Employment, decreasing by 6.1% (-144,000 people).

State and territory performance

In 2023-24, east coast states New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland accounted for the largest share of each of the three key state economic indicators: Sales and service income, Employment and Wages and salaries.

State and territory growth

  • All states and territories recorded growth in the three key state economic indicators for Total selected industries, with the exception of Northern Territory which recorded a 1.9% (-$938m) decrease in Sales and service income.
  • South Australia showed the fastest growth in Sales and service income (5.1%, $12.9b), driven by Construction (10.3%, $2.8b) and Wholesale trade (4.7%, $2.1b).
  • Wages and salaries increased for all states and territories, with the largest increase in New South Wales (6.3%, $16.9b).
  • Employment increased across all state and territories, with the strongest increase in New South Wales (94,000 people, 2.2%).

  • New South Wales had the largest growth in Sales and service income with a $66.7b (4.4%) increase, followed by Victoria and Western Australia, growing $46.6b (4.1%) and $30.7b (4.1%) respectively.
  • Northern Territory was the only jurisdiction with a fall in Sales and Service income, recording a $938m (-1.9%) decrease.

Methodology

Scope

The scope of this release includes all businesses operating in the Australian economy during 2023-24, except for those outlined in the scope section of the Australian Industry methodology. 

Geography

The data available includes estimates for Australia with selected data items published at the state and territory level.

Source

The Economic Activity Survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and administrative data from the Australian Tax Office.

Collection method

Data is collected annually through the Economic Activity Survey, which is sent to approximately 18,828 businesses. This is supplemented by administrative data from the Australian Tax Office (ATO).
